Take Action After The Collision

Car Accidents

When people are involved in a car accident in New Jersey, they may feel stunned right after the collision occurs. However, it is important for people to take certain steps so they have all of the necessary information.

Before people think about calling law enforcement, they should usually make sure their car is completely stopped. Esurance says that people should typically put their cars into park and turn the engine off. Sometimes someone may need to move his or her car to the side of the road or turn on the hazard lights. Although some people may want to get out of their vehicles immediately to assess the damage, it is a good idea to take a deep breath and calm down. Before people get out, they should generally make sure there are no cars coming.

After people call law enforcement, it is a good idea to write down all of the information about the collision. People typically need the make, model and license plate number of every car affected by the crash. Additionally, people should write down the names and contact information of the drivers, passengers and eyewitnesses. After law enforcement arrives, it is a good idea to write down the name of the law enforcement officer.

People should also make sure they document how the collision occurred. According to Nerd Wallet, people should generally write down the direction a car was driving, how fast the vehicle was moving and any other information they think may be relevant. Some people may want to make a diagram to show the positions of the cars before and after the accident.
