Tips For Driving in The Rain

Car Accidents

Summer storms are a common occurrence, even as the season draws to a close. Accordingly, even the safest New Jersey drivers run the risk of an accident when driving in the rain, unless they take the proper precautions. Here are a few tips to make sure you and other drivers remain safe and secure when on the road.

Don’t Use Cruise Control

Using cruise control on rain slicked road can actually increase your risk of hydroplaning. Hydroplaning is when your tires ride on the top layer of water instead of the road, and cruise control causes your vehicle to accelerate faster in wet conditions. Instead, maintain a slow speed on wet roads even if that means you must go under the speed limit.

Use Your Headlights

Headlights should be on in the rain even if you’re driving during the day. Not only will they help you see better, they’ll also prevent you from running into legal trouble (all states have laws on the books stating that headlights must be in use when visibility is low). Additionally, be sure to replace your windshield wipers as needed to ensure they work properly when a storm hits.

Stay Focused

If you’ve been driving for quite a while you may fall into the habit of driving on autopilot so to speak. When weather is bad this habit can be deadly, especially on rain-soaked roads. Remain alert and aware when driving during a storm to ensure you can react to any unexpected hazards. Storms may cause debris in the road and it might be difficult to see road blockages until you’re right on top of them.
